If you think about buying a camera, would you consider to make your selection based on the design? Well, most of us would rather go for function than style. But what if you don’t have to make a compromise? The Olympus PEN-F seems too have it all.
Let’s start with the design. You probably won’t be surprised when I tell you, that (good) design is really important to me.
The swinging 60’s
The retro trend is something that ironically won’t get old in fashion, photography and design. We are all addicted to the emotions that nostalgic looking design is evoking in us. What is it that a car from the 60’s lets our heart beat faster than a new vehicle? Is it the sexy lines instead of the functional design?
What is it about the feel of 60’s and 70’s inspired clothes, which make you look cooler and more rebellious than average people? And what about photography? Why is it that photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe and his black and white aesthetic from the late 60’s to 70’s are more appealing than ever? Even Raf Simons prints them on his clothes and they also inspired mastermind Jurgen Teller for his latest exhibition in Bundeskunsthalle in Berlin.
The Olympus PEN-F has it’s roots in the same period around the 60’s. Olympus did everything right and just took the design and transformed it into the present. That’s what I always hope for when it comes to car manufacturers – take an old car chassis and upgrade it with latest (electric) technology. So as you can see this camera is definitely a gem.
I really don’t know the answer for our retro love but one thing is for sure:
“We are addicted to nostalgia.”
Isn’t nostalgia the same emotion every photograph creates in us? Already after the moment we took the photo it becomes a timepiece of the past, a trigger for nostalgia.
The camera did win some awards in it’s category already. I will test the PEN-F for the next weeks and will let you know my personal experience soon – the first pictures I take will be uploaded on Instagram in the coming days. For now I’m already a fan of it’s super handy size and the practical flippable monitor – a blogger standard for now ;)
