As you already know, I’m always scouting for young talents & creative people in Vienna. I know we are not a fashion metropolis, but from time to time some creative individuals are rising up! The Fashion Show at Angewandte is always a perfect opportunity to find those rare creative diamonds.
Made in Austria
Besides Helmut Lang, the most influential mastermind of our times, Austria does have a few really extraordinary designers. They are working for an apple a day in big fashion houses like J.W. Anderson, Raf Simons, Vivienne Westwood, etc. and their names are yet unfamiliar. Last time in New York I had the chance to meet Simon Grundtner who is working for Raf Simons. And even Raf is amazed by his talent, so you better remember his name!
Show Angewandte 17
So back to the fashion show of Vienna’s most promising fashion designer nursery “die Angewandte”. Every year they show what their disciples have created during their studies. This time supervised by the versed fashion mastermind Hussein Chalayan (who – by the way – showed the most exciting pieces at last week’s London Mens Fashion Week).
Menswear Favorites from Angewandte
For obvious reasons my focus is on menswear, therefore I concentrated on the (quite plentiful) men’s styles. So without further ado – here are my favorite pieces from the show:
I was pretty excited to see Hvala Ilija’s pieces, since I interviewed him here. Once again, he didn’t disappoint with his “Duty Free” collection. It was the most street-style collection of the show, which means it’s absolutely “now”. My favorite look was the beige smuggler motorcycle pant combined with a balkan racing long sleeve shirt (see photo above).
I also found the Attila Lajos collection quite interesting. His presentation was called “Paradise Lost”. It has a very romantic appeal with it’s bedazzled jackets and soft shapes and colors. The collection reminds me of the playful yet romantic attitude of Jonathan Anderson’s artworks.
37 designers in one show
This was by far there longest fashion show I ever attended – 37 designers in one show! It felt like an XXL movie screening. In the end I really couldn’t sit anymore. So there were a lot of really talented other designers with promising collections – and I’m actually not 100% sure I tagged all the right names (please correct me if I’m wrong ;)).
Buy local design and help Vienna’s scene grow
This was my selection of personal favorites from the Show of Angewandte 17. But as always – taste is something personal and it’s good that every vision can be presented and seen, and moreover also be bought at some point. Therefore I think we should all support local design together!
That’s why I’m wearing a shirt of Viennese skate label Whitehouse3000 by Lukas Gansterer, who is actually a photographer, but also attended the show.
