Travel yourself

Wherever you travel you will see the risen arms. Since some arms are too short, the selfie stick prosthesis became the favourite tourist equipment too. It seems the meaning of life turned into catching as many selfies around the globe as possible. In the blurred backdrop of these pictures you can find tourist magnet postcard motives. It’s the statement of our times to send these pics to your family and friends WhatsApp groups.

Selfitis

If you feel the urge to take selfies, you may have a genuine “psychological complex” research has suggested. It’s called “selfitis”, which is the obsessive taking of selfies. The term was first coined in 2014 as part of a series of parodies, claiming selfitis was declared a new found mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. But in reality, there is a 2015 study conducted by researchers at The Ohio State University, which found that men who tend to post more selfies than others scored higher on measures of narcissism and psychopathy. So are selfies any good?

Me, myself and I

I grew up in a different world. Some of the greatest artists or designers were rarely seen in public – and also just a few photographs were taken of them. Masters of hiding like Martin Margiela and Helmut Lang were my heroes and barely existed in the public eye. There was always their skills, their design, in the foreground and there was no cult about their self. If so, it was more about the mystery they created about themselves. Even selfies were all about an artistic vision and done by only a few photographers (with the help of mirrors often so).

Selfie game strong

Currently also brands like Ader error and countless fashion magazines display the selfie addiction as an artform. Since contemporary art mostly mirrors society it was just a matter of time when we will look at selfies from a different angle. I enjoyed playing with the selfie addiction in this editorial. Am I already infected with the Selfitis virus? Let’s hope not!
