Have you ever wondered how boring scrolling through your Instagram feed has become? Photography has reached peak perfection – and at the same time it has lost it’s soul.

Mistake

Everyone seems to own a DSLR camera by now and every 8 year old can edit pictures in Lightroom better than all of us. With the rise of  high end hobby photography a new species arose – the Influencer. Most influencers tend to make the same “mistake” the luxury market made for years. Play it safe and copy everything that worked well before. Don’t try to innovate – just imitate. The hunger for this alleged perfection is blinding our eyes now day by day.

ISO up

Modern photography has many advantages, but also made the flash superfluous. You can push the ISO to infinite heights and even night photography is possible without any artificial source of light. So flash photography has become an artform just a few are not afraid to use. Is the flash the answer to get rid of the boring everyday picture overload? Probably not, but it changes your pictures to give them a more iconic look (until the influencers will make it mainstream).

When the flash hit me

I remember my first contact with good old flash photography when my career in fashion started to get serious. Those teenage days also brought me to a Juergen Teller exhibition – and his perspective immediately hooked me. The real rawness of his photos lets you get more out of a picture. Although back than I didn’t get Juergen’s norm core attitude which became the drive of the whole fashion industry by now.

I did love one picture in particular, in which Kirsten McMenamy stands raw and naked smoking a cigarette and having a Versace heart drawn with lipstick on her chest.  I immediately knew I like women strong and independent like this vision of a woman in her eve costume looking tough as hell!

Flashback

Does anyone here remember the first flash pictures Terry Richardson made for Sisley? Sisley made a tribe out of that. I only bought the boring fashion pieces from the Italian brand because of Terry. Especially the “cowcaine” picture is still in my head.

Well, enough with back-flash stories. Luckily some really good flash photographers are still out there nowadays, and there are even some Viennese masters. Get ready to find more excitement while scrolling through your otherwise meaningless Instagram feed:
